March 2016 visit with John Culver in Sparta, Georgia

Although John is known for ‘abstract’ painting, he recently helped restore this outdoor mural (dating from the time of the Atlanta Olympics) on the main street in Sparta:

A local arts project had proposed for John to turn these two abandoned building across the street into “Marconauts” (sp?)– futuristic space and time travel machines often appearing in his paintings:

Unfortunately that proposal hasn’t worked out, but John hopes to create a building-sized “Marconaut” or two on freshly constructed small building-sized structures he’ll be able to move from place to place.  These recent birdhouses are his first three-dimensional “Marconauts”:
