A combination outdoor collection display and art environment installation, John Dilandro has been working on his site since 2012. Along Schuenemann Rd on either side of the driveway, extensive strings of lights and spotlights come on and begin to pulse at dusk. John seems to have a special fondness for glass: electrical insulators, plates, and bottles transmit the glinting Texas sunlight. His assemblages often have an entertaining surrealist/absurdist bend (goat frozen atop a children’s slide, for ex).
Off to the side here is a Halloween figure hanging in a barn and a colorful shooting range with old appliance targets. He didn’t shoot off any of the cannon sculptures while I was here, but was an accommodating host and very enjoyable to talk with. John says he has no idea how his site became known as the “House of Lights” – his house is mostly out-of-sight in the the back of the property with only a porch-light! He hopes to attract as many visitors as possible and makes an effort to keep his front gate almost always open during his seven days a week ‘official’ open hours: 7 AM to 8:30 PM.
