During my 2010 visit, MT Liggett made a ‘Sir Frederick’ totem. He must of realized by then that was never getting rid of me, so he planted my likeness near the corner of the gravel road to his studio and said he would think about me “for a millisecond” every time he drove by! He told me that the totem belonged to me, that I could take it away if I wanted to. When he was in the hospital for the final time, I took the loose ‘Sir Frederick’ sign home for safe keeping and returned it after it became clear that the Kohler Foundation would be preserving the site. The Foundation offered to have Erika Nelson make a replica of the sign (which was/is displayed over my office door). I was always mystified by the bull head on the ‘S’ for Scruton body – a bull-headed photographer maybe – until Erika pointed-out that the bull head made the ‘S’ also stand for ‘shit’. MT had been – and is still – laughing at me from the grave.
