A life-long resident of Birmingham whose work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Joe Minter’s first major local recognition came at age 81. He always hopes to see young people visit his African Village in America, and frequently says his work is “for them.” To Joe’s great delight, schoolchildren finally came by the busloads to his ‘Joe Minter is Here’ exhibition. Joe can barely control his emotions when showing off the dozens of thank you letters they sent.

In a 2025 ceremony at the Birmingham Museum of Art, the mayor of Birmingham presented Joe Minter with the City’s ‘Putting People First Award’ (see link under ‘External resources’ below map).
